52-week highs and lows 9-23-08

The stock market has trended lower in the past hour of trading, hitting new session lows recently, with the S&P leading on the downside.

The market opened flat this morning, then rallied over the first 20 minutes of the session as Fed Chairman Bernanke, Treasury Secretary Paulson, SEC Commissioner Cox and OFHEO Director Lockhart began giving their testimony before the Senate Banking Committee on the proposal to buy $700 bln of troubled assets from banks to shore up the financial system.

Since hitting their respective highs (the Nasdaq actually rallied for the first hour of trade), the major averages have been slowly trending lower, trading modestly in negative territory at midday. Today's focus is all on the Senate testimony (it has been a slow day otherwise, but the testimony would probably overshadow any notable news item anyways).

The testimony is long and ongoing. For summaries. Dow is currently -149 to ~10866; Nasdaq is currently -23 to ~2156; S&P is currently -17 to ~1190... From a technical perspective, The major indices continue to deteriorate moving through midday, hitting fresh session lows. The SPX has once again breached the key 1200 level while the INDU slides back beneath 11000.

Technology continues to display the least weakness after earlier showing the most strength & leading the indices to earlier highs. TRIN levels on both NYSE & NASDAQ have moved slightly above 1.0. Decliners now outpace advancers by nearly 3:1 on NYSE & by a ration of better than 2:1 on NASDAQ.

The Bond market traded higher on overnight activity, but around 7:00ET, the 10-yr tanked but then recovered shortly after right before the open of pit trading. Since the open, the 10-yr is trading with noticeable volatility and is just below session highs. The 10-yr is currently +06/32 3.812%.

In Commodities, Nov crude ($104.82 -4.55) has remained in negative territory all session and recently hit a new session low of $104.05 as it has been trending lower all morning and afternoon. Shortly after the recent low, crude is ~$1 higher... In Europe, mkts ended sharply lower for the second straight day as investors fretted about the fate of a $700 billion financial sector bailout plan that the United States is trying to push through Congress.

FTSE closed -1.9%; DAX closed -0.6%; CAC closed -2.0%, RTS -2.2%... Note in Asia, the Nikkei closed %, the Hang Seng closed % and the Shanghai Composite closed %... On the Earnings calendar, 2 cos are confirmed to report today after the close. Tomorrow before the open, 1 co is confirmed to report... On the Economic calendar, nothing remains on the schedule for today, nor is anything scheduled tomorrow before the open.
