Markets Rally.The White House View: The Grind It Out Economy Nearly 30 months into President Obama's first-term, the markets and the economy are showing signs of fatigue. The response at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue seems to be one of grudging acceptance. Dow Jones Industrial Average
rose 121 points, or 1 percent, to 12,170 in late afternoon trading. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13, or 1 percent, to 1,293. The Nasdaq composite rose 16, or 0.6 percent, to 2,691. Stock indexes have fallen for six straight days on a string of poor reports on manufacturing, home sales, hiring and consumer confidence. It's the longest losing streak for The Dow Jones industrial average in over a year. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell for the longest period since February 2009.
